Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. Welcome to the Award Ceremony of the FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Programme.
2. Today, we celebrate the official recognition of 28 new GIAHS sites, across 14 countries, from 4 regions across the globe.
3. From the mountains of Central Asia to the Forest in Brazil,
4. From nomadic pastoral systems to sustainable fisheries,
5. These diverse sites illustrate the ingenuity, hard work, and resilience of the GIAHS communities who have nurtured and sustained these ancestral traditions for generations.
6. My special congratulations go to the farmers, fishers, pastoralists, and foresters who keep this traditional knowledge alive, at a time when it is more relevant than ever.
7. These time-tested innovations offer practical lessons for protecting ecosystems, adapting to the impacts of the climate crisis, ensuring food security, and protecting livelihoods.
8. This ceremony comes as FAO turns 80, and we are proud that as we celebrate eight decades of FAO’s work, the GIAHS network has expanded beyond 100 recognized sites.
9. Today is indeed a moment to celebrate what we have achieved together.
10. As well as a reminder that GIAHS is a living heritage and we need to ensure it continues to thrive,
11. The GIAHS action plans must continue to be our guide.
12. Each GIAHS site reflects how agricultural traditions can help achieve the Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life – leaving no one behind.
13. Congratulations once again to the 28 new GIAHS sites!
14. Thank you.
