INDIA 2024. Jharkhand
25 September 2024, Bero block, Ranchi, Jharkhand State, India. Lemongrass fields near the lemongrass distillation unit in Bero, Ranchi District. Lemongrass thrives in poor soils that are otherwise unfit for cultivation. Climate-resilient and fast-growing, lemongrass offers a valuable livelihood for landless tribal women, who have been supported under the Jharkhand Opportunities for Harnessing Rural Growth (JOHAR) programme to grow the crop and join the producer group that manages the distillation unit. Established with investment from JOHAR – an initiative of the Government of Jharkhand, supported by FAO and financed by the World Bank – the facility processes the raw product and produced 350 litres of high-quality oil in 2023, which was sold across the state. Five such units have been set up in Jharkhand, enabling the sustainable harvesting and processing of lemongrass, and helping marginalized rural communities to diversify their incomes and build resilience.

Background Information
Established with investment from the Jharkhand Opportunities for Harnessing Rural Growth (JOHAR) programme – an initiative of the Government of Jharkhand, supported by FAO and financed by the World Bank – the facility produced 350 litres of high-quality oil in 2023, now sold across the state. JOHAR has set up five such units in Jharkhand, generating strong returns for farmers. In a state where forests are central to rural livelihoods – particularly for marginalized tribal communities – the sustainable and profitable harvesting of aromatic plants and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is helping diversify incomes and build resilience.
