Background Information
Asha is Chair of the Kanke Producer Group and member of the Board of Directors for the Sarhul Agricultural Producer Company Limited, established under the Jharkhand Opportunities for Harnessing Rural Growth (JOHAR) programme. Before joining JOHAR, Asha’s life was shaped by traditional farming practices with limited production mainly for family use. Lack of access to markets and modern tools kept her confined to subsistence farming. Joining the Kanke Producer Group through JOHAR opened new opportunities for Asha and her community. Asha has been able to improve her house and send her children to good schools. With collective support, access to better agricultural inputs, training in high-value crop production, and improved market linkages, she transformed her role from subsistence farmer to a community leader and entrepreneur. Under JOHAR’s guidance, Sarhul empowers smallholder farmers like Asha to overcome challenges such as fragmented landholdings and mechanization gaps, enabling them to increase productivity, earn higher incomes, and build more resilient livelihoods.
