Background Information With design and implementation support from FAO, the programme has empowered Jharkhand’s women by supporting producer groups and opening access to markets. The Sonmer Bahiratoli Layer Producer Group receive low-cost, high-quality chicks and infrastructure to manage layer units for egg production. The chicks are of the Croiler variety – a hardy, fast-growing mixed breed developed by crossbreeding local and commercial poultry – well-suited for backyard rearing in rural conditions. Women first raise the chicks in backyards at home, then shift them to collectively managed layer units, where they produce eggs that are sold through JOHAR-supported egg markets, helping secure better prices and regular income for farming households.
