Background Information
She explains how previously the villagers we didn’t know how to grow and sell lemongrass, and weren’t able to process it. But after the distillation unit was built under the Jharkhand Opportunities for Harnessing Rural Growth (JOHAR) programme – implemented by the Government of Jharkhand, supported by FAO and financed by the World Bank – the producer group was formed to produce and process lemongrass, bringing in a good profit with the processed oil – even in the dry season or droughts. Mithila lived in poverty since childhood, but has been enabled to work as a lemongrass oil producer with support from JOHAR, and to help other women achieve a more reliable income too. In Jharkhand, where forests play a vital role in rural livelihoods – particularly for marginalized tribal groups – harvesting aromatic plants and NTFPs sustainably and profitably has helped to diversify livelihoods and build resilience.
