Background Information With design and implementation support from FAO, the programme has empowered Jharkhand’s women by investing in diversifying livelihoods, boosting incomes, and supporting access to markets. Lac is a natural resin secreted by tiny insects raised on specific host trees like palash and ber. In Jharkhand, tribal and landless women are increasingly supported to cultivate this high-value crop through training, input support, and market linkages provided under the JOHAR programme. By reviving and strengthening this age-old practice, lac cultivation is helping women diversify their livelihoods and boost household incomes in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way.
