1. To mark the 2025 International Day for Biodiversity, FAO joins the Convention on Biological Diversity in celebrating this year’s theme of “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”
2. A theme that is reflected across the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 to support food security and nutrition for all, while protecting, restoring and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
3. Biodiversity is the foundation of sustainable agrifood systems, food security, and for improving the livelihoods of millions of people around the world.
4. Agrifood systems manage significant portions of the world’s natural resources and have a vital role to play in the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity.
5. Yet, the climate crisis, habitat destruction and unsustainable agricultural practices threaten biodiversity.
6. To address these challenges, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a roadmap with goals and targets that advance the sustainable transformation of agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable,
7. And to enhance biodiversity to ensure food security and nutrition for all.
8. FAO assists Members in their efforts to put the Framework into action and to monitor progress,
9. In support of the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
10. On this International Day for Biodiversity, let us emphasize the central role of agrifood systems in halting biodiversity loss, and in providing the solutions for sustainable development,
11. For the benefit of people and in harmony with nature.
12. Thank you.
