20 May 2025
Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. Welcome to this year’s global celebration of World Bee Day,
2. And to the 2nd International Forum for Action on Sustainable Beekeeping and Pollination.
3. Ethiopia is one of the world’s leading producers of honey and beeswax, and I wish to thank the Government of Ethiopia for hosting this year’s Forum.
4. Ethiopia produces approximately 60,000 tonnes of honey annually and is Africa’s largest producer, with more than 2 million households involved in beekeeping.
5. Today, we are celebrating bees and other pollinators - small creatures that are essential to our foods, our health, our environment, and our economy.
6. Nearly 90% of the world’s flowering plants depend on pollinators,
7. As do 75% of the world’s most important crops that provide fruit and seeds for human consumption.
8. Pollinators have enormous economic value.
9. Without them, we would lose up to 8% of global crop production, worth around 577 billion US Dollars each year.
10. These figures are not just numbers, they represent the jobs, livelihoods, medicines and foods needed by people around the world.
11. Yet, bees and other pollinators face many challenges such as pests, habitat loss, pesticide misuse, and the impacts of the climate crisis.
12. For this reason, international collaboration is critical. We need to work together in an efficient, effective and coherent manner to address these challenges collectively and identify solutions that benefit everyone - farmers, communities, and the planet.
13. We all have a role to play in protecting pollinators, such as through better agricultural practices, community engagement, supporting beekeepers, and by developing enabling policies that help pollinators, beekeepers and farmers.
14. For this reason, the recent 20th Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture recommended the establishment of a global multistakeholder pollinator platform.
15. This year’s World Bee Day theme “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All” reminds us that we can improve and maintain habitats, conserve biodiversity, and ensure food security and climate resilience by protecting pollinators and supporting sustainable beekeeping,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
16. In the context of FAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations this year, I would like to thank the Governments of Ethiopia and Slovenia, and all our partners, for making this event possible, and for their continue support towards FAO’s mandate.
17. This Forum is an opportunity for us to share knowledge, build stronger partnerships and work towards a future where bees and other pollinators are protected, agriculture is sustainable and food security is ensured,
18. For better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, leaving no one behind.
19. As we mark World Bee Day 2025, I wish you fruitful discussions and a successful event.
20. Thank you.
