Undated photo Young boy with child on his back harvesting coffee berries. - - Smallholder Agricultural Productivity: Agricultural Research: MLW/92/007. Smallholder Coffee Research and Development Programme - Mzuzu Research Station This is a subcomponent of the Smallholder Agricultural Productivity Programme funded by UNDP. Coffee is the 4th foreign exchange crop earner after tobacco, tea and sugar. The subcomponent is engaged in improving coffee management practices, disease and pest control techniques in the smallholder areas. The major constraints affecting coffee production among smallholders have been identified and, through research, affordable technologies have been developed that can be integrated in the smallholder farming systems. These include integration of coffee with food crops, simpler methods of pruning coffee, rejuvenation methods that entail minimum crop loss during change of cycle, and use of agroforestry species in alley cropping.
