Horn of Africa Crisis
23 August 2011, Mutwaathi - A papaya tree. Most people in this drought-prone area are smallholder farmers and agro-pastoralists, dependent on rainfall for their crops. However, the failed 2010 short rains and the erratic 2011 long rains have resulted in major crop loss and depleted seed stocks.
FAO is working to improve communities' resilience to drought by improving soil and water management methods and encouraging farmers to grow more drought-resistant crops and fruit trees such as mango and papaya trees.
