Background Information A team of FAO experts are carrying out a five-year project in the Rajasthan Canal area, operational from 1966 to 1971. The project is financed, in part, by the United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) Special Fund. The purpose of the project is to carry out reconnaissance and detailed surveys of the project is to carry out reconnaissance and detailed surveys of the soils of the Rajasthan Canal area and to conduct experiments and demonstrations for optimum soil and water use and efficient plant production. The project includes the preparation of soil and soil-capability Ņ and the formulation of recommendations on the development of irrigated agriculture in an area of over 5 million acres. Training programmes will also be established for soil surveys, agronomies, and soil and water management. The Special Fund allocation is US$ 946,900 with an additional US$ 1,330,000 in cash and kind from the Government of India.
