01 November 2013, KIROKA, TANZANIA - Radhia Abdul Kulunge, a vegetable seller, buys rice from Mwajuma Omari Athumani and Farida Aboul (l-r) at the Kiroka market. Many of the women now practice SRI (System of Rice Intensification) methods in their rice paddies to increase yields and reduce water usage. Those using the SRI method have noticed a dramatic increase in rice yields, sometimes three to four fold over traditional methods. A FAO project to strengthen capacity of farms for climate change is underway in Kiroka, Tanzania. "It's something we may call climate-smart agriculture," says mission project co-ordinator Prof. Henry Mahoo, who teaches at the Sokoine University of Agriculture. The project aims to improve land and water management, promote climate resilient agriculture and encourage dialogue and understanding regarding climate change adaptation practices.
