Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme (GREP)
26 November 2010, Meru - A herd of buffalo grazing at the Meru National Park where the last known outbreak of rinderpest amongst the local buffalo population was recorded almost a decade ago. Rinderpest, a disease afflicting mainly cloven-hooved animals, is only the second disease to be successfully wiped out globally, after smallpox, through human efforts. It is seen as a significant step in the fight against poverty and hunger, especially in communities that depend on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods.
