NUTRITIONAL EDUCATION AND SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING OF VULNERABLE GROUPS
Colombia, December 1980. Since 1969 the UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP)
has been assisting the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF) whose aim is the protection and care of minors and the improvement of family well being.
Food worth $55 .8 million has been provided by WFP in the form of 96,530
tons of maize flour, wheat flour, de-fatted soy-flour, dried skim milk, wheat
soya blend, corn soya milk, canned fish, meat, cheese, vegetable oil, edible
fat, pulses and milk biscuits which, combined with locally-produced food
provided by ICBF, are distributed to beneficiaries in the seven most densely
populated provinces of Colombia. ICBF is responsible for the preparation of
?Bienestarina? a high-protein blend of WFP maize flour, defatted soy-flour,
wheat flour, and dried skim milk milk plus added vitamins, DL Metionine and
flavours. ?Bienstarina? is included in all rations distributed by ICBF to
pregnant and nursing mothersat health and community centres; to pre-school children and nurseries, kindergartens,
community and health centres; and to school children.
About 208 million rations are provided annually to some 1,1 million
beneficiaries.
