Unweaned mice are essential in foot_and_mouth disease investigation. They are very sensitive to the virus and they are used to test for its presence in material taken from suspected animals. Picture shows recently born mouse being injected.
Since experts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) diagnosed a virulent African form of foot-and-mouth disease in 1961, fourteen European countries have provided funds and vaccines to Turkey for a full-scale campaign against the disease. The campaign was a joint endeavour by FAO and the Turkish Government. In May 1967 a laboratory was completed by the Government near Ankara which will eventually produce enough vaccine to make imports unnecessary. The veterinary and research staff, mainly trained in Britain, are all Turkish. One FAO expert, Dr. Henri Griard (Switzerland), remains as technical advisor.
