Background Information The population of Upper Volta is nearly five millions, with some 95 percent living on the land. Although the country achieved independence in 1960 it was faced with a low general level of education and an archaic system of agriculture. Improvements in agricultural production and techniques are essential in raising living standards generally, and one of the first steps taken by the Government has been the establishment of Rural Education Centres . This joint Unesco/Freedom from Hunger Campaign Gift Coupon project seeks aid for the supply of seeds, pesticides, sprayers and dusters for 50 centres for girls and 150 centres for boys . The centres are providing practical training in elementary horticultural techniques . Some US $8. 000 in Gift Coupons had been donated by mid- 1970.
