Background Information
In 1965 the Government was obliged to adopt a policy of financial stringency necessitating drastic economies in public expenditure. Budgetary cuts seriously affected educational institutions and cuts in students' stipends brought a drop in daily attendance and new enrolments. The Government, concerned about the acute shortage of trained manpower, requested food aid from the UN/FAO World Food Programme for the provision of school meals. Since the commencement of the three-year project in 1968, new enrolments in various high schools and training institutes have exceeded the original target by 25 percent. The total cost of the project to WFP will be US$ 546,000.
