ERITREA 1968. UNDP Inter-Regional Desert Locust Project in East Africa
July 1968 (exact date unknown). Eritrea. Measurements of insects’ wings at the Laboratory of the Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa in
Asmara, Eritrea. Measurements of the insect's wings and other body parts are taken regularly because they are related to breeding density of hoppers and, when combined with other observations in the field, may indicate their place of origin.

Background Information
More than 40 countries, from West Africa to North India, are now threatened with the biggest desert locust outbreak since 1959, a record plague year. International efforts to control the desert locust are being coordinated by the food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which is providing specialized assistance, financing the Desert Locust Information Service and aiding national and regional control with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funds. In East Africa, co-operative control work is being carried out by Ethiopia, Somalia, Territory of the Afar and Issa Peoples (formerly French Somaliland), East Africa (DLCO/EA). Sudan, also with UN aid, and in co-operation with DLCO/EA, is attempting to save its crops from threatening locust swarms at DLCO/EA laboratory, Asmara.
