1951 (exact date unknown). Mexico. Ing. Louis Huguet inspecting the technique used by the men in charge of measuring tree-growth. A hollow increment borer is inserted into the tree until it reaches the central part, then extracted, and a wooden "cigarette" is pushed out of its interior. This clearly reveals the growth rings.

Background Information
Forestry expert, Mr. Louis Huguet had been in Mexico since 1951 on a technical assistance assignment for FAO. Attached to the Nacional Financiera, a Mexican Government development agency, his main activities had been concerned with the development of the forest resources of the State of Michoacán. He had drafted plans for the establishment of integrated forest industries; including a pulp and newsprint plant, carried out a detailed forest inventory and prepared a forest management plan. The project was about to enter the construction stage.
