Background Information
Afforestation/Reforestation Initiatives in Southeastern Afghanistan (Khust Province).
Khust province is in Southeastern Afghanistan, and mountains and forests entirely cover it. Deforestation and rangeland overuse put Khust province in a critical position, with 0.2ha of forest destroyed annually. So far 278ha out of 15300ha have been destroyed since 2000.
The FAO implemented afforestation and reforestation initiatives to rehabilitate degraded forests and planted 260000 saplings of walnut, pine nut, and pine across 2111 hectares of degraded forest land. In addition, nine water reservoirs were constructed to regularly irrigate the newly planted saplings.
To enhance the livelihoods of the local communities who directly or indirectly depend on forest resources FAO planted 47,950 fruit saplings of almond, Peach, cherry, and orange which covered 232 ha of land.
This plantation aimed to decrease pressure on forests, and rangeland, and restore biodiversity.
The project is financially supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
