Background Information
FAO is promoting high conservation value forest species to help contain deforestation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Paktya province.
Situated in eastern Afghanistan, Paktya province used to be known for its pine and pine nut forests. Sustainable forest management plays a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while it contributes to mitigating climate change because of its great capacity to sequestrate carbon dioxide.
Since 2019, FAO has initiated the reforestation of 2,718 hectares of deforested pine, pine nut, and walnut forests in Said Karam and Ahmad Aba districts. This FAO project has supported the establishment of 13 Forest Management Associations (FMA) to sustainably manage the forest and contribute to afforestation and reforestation initiatives.
As a result of these efforts, 71 home-based walnut and pine nut nurseries have been established. 197,360 walnut trees, 29,160 pine nut trees, and 174,360 almond saplings have been planted as afforestation and reforestation initiatives across 2,718 hectares of deforested area.
In addition, FAO supported the local communities with alternative livelihood options to reduce the pressure on forests in terms of Agroforestry plot establishment in 134 ha of land, distribution of 2,959 fuel-efficient cookstoves, and 300 backyard poultry packages.
