1. Livestock is a vital part of our agrifood systems, providing essential nutrients, livelihoods and economic opportunities for billions of people around the world.
2. But the livestock sector faces complex challenges, including environmental degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss.
3. At the same time, a recent FAO study found that about 32% of methane emissions come from livestock systems.
4. Methane accounts for about 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a major driver of the climate crisis.
5. Curbing livestock methane emissions is therefore not only an important pathway to achieve the Paris Agreement, but also significantly contributes to the transformation of agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.
6. To achieve this, we need coordinated global action, innovation and the right incentives for farmers and producers – which was the message voiced in September 2023 at the first-ever FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation that brought together partners to pave the way forward.
7. To support countries, FAO is now implementing the agreed Framework and will develop the Global Plan of Action.
8. At the same time, we are working on a comprehensive science and evidence-based global assessment of the contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable agrifood systems, nutrition and healthy diets.
9. When managed sustainably, livestock systems have great potential for important offsets such as sequestering carbon in soils and vegetation, producing renewable energy and recycling nutrients.
10. In this regard, FAO applauds actions taken by partners across the dairy and beef sectors to reduce environmental impacts, while enhancing the productivity and incomes of farmers and producers.
11. We need sustained commitment and investment in research, innovation, and incentives to meet our climate goals.
12. Solutions must be context-specific, designed and implemented at the farms level, and economically viable.
13. Farmers must be at the center of engagement between the government and the research community.
14. Together, we can ensure a better future for the livestock sector with better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life – leaving no one behind.
