Background Information Empowering Women through Beekeeping in Bamyan province of Afghanistan

Apiculture, the practice of beekeeping, plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem, economy, and nutrition. Honey is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a healthier alternative to refined sugars.

In addition to honey, they are also harvesting bee pollen, which is rich in essential nutrients and propolis, a sticky substance known for its antimicrobial and antiviral properties, providing natural remedies for various ailments.

In June 2024, 200 female beneficiaries in Bamyan Center and Kahmard district received beekeeping packages as part of Project GCP/AFG/106/USA. These women are now actively practicing beekeeping and have achieved an average honey production of 50 kg per person so far which worth USD 350.

This initiative in Bamyan is empowering women, raising self-reliance, and promoting sustainable livelihoods through the practice of apiculture.
