Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Colleagues,
1. Today’s Special Event organized by the Local 2030 Coalition is part of an established tradition during the HLPF and is an important platform for dialogues and collaboration, where local governments, civil society, youth and UN agencies can convene to discuss progress, share insights, and forge partnerships.
2. The theme of this year’s Special Event is “Unlocking transformative change through the localization of the six SDG transitions”.
3. Our collective commitment is more critical than ever as we navigate the complex path towards achieving the SDGs – and we have less than six years to do so.
4. FAO, as a co-chair of the Local2030 Coalition is committed to SDG localization.
5. We are committed to driving this mission forward, together with our colleagues from UN Habitat and other UN partner agencies.
6. The High Impact Initiative on Localization is a vehicle to promote and drive SDG localization efforts worldwide.
7. FAO has been proactively supporting the implementation of the Initiative, recognizing its potential to empower local and regional governments.
8. FAO is also proud to implement another key High Impact Initiative – on Agrifood Systems.
9. Agrifood systems are one of the six transitions, which are pivotal for the acceleration of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs.
10. It is, therefore, critically important for FAO to collaborate with other UN agencies in Working Group 1, which focuses on translating six transitions to the local level to scale up synergies and catalyze change through local action.
11. According to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2024 report, launched at the HLPF on Food Security and Nutrition, of the 2.2 billion moderately and severely food insecure people in the world, 1.7 billion live in urban and peri-urban areas.
12. Urban and peri-urban areas face considerable challenges, including youth unemployment, lack of infrastructure, high levels of inequality, political instability, and vulnerability to conflicts and to health and environmental hazards.
13. But they are also at the heart of transition and offer economic opportunities and innovations.
Dear Colleagues,
14. Let us recommit ourselves to the localization of the SDGs.
15. Let us leverage the momentum generated by the Local2030 Coalition to scale up our impact, foster inclusive partnerships, and mobilize resources at all levels.
16. The challenges we face are multiple and diverse, but so too are the opportunities if we work together with determination and innovation.
17. Let us continue working together to build a more sustainable future for all.
18. Together, let us unlock the transformative change we need.
19. Thank you.
