1. Welcome to this special event on the FAO Green Cities Initiative.
2. I launched the Green Cities Initiative at the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2020 to help build up and transforming our cities into greener, healthier, and more resilient urban environments.
3. The aim of Green Cities is to integrate agrifood systems with future cities and make a tangible impact on the health and wellbeing of the people in hundreds of cities around the world by 2030.
4. Since the start, through a strong partnership, the Initiative has been working with vibrant and inclusive cities around the world to embrace sustainable practices, share solutions and success stories.
5. For example, in Roseau, Dominica, tree planting was carried out in selected schools and in public areas like parks, beaches, and riverbanks.
6. In Colombo, Sri Lanka, the Green Cities Initiative has strengthened urban agriculture through sustainable greenhouses and water efficient systems.
7. In Yaoundé, Cameroon, efforts are focused on managing bio-waste for composting and urban agriculture.
8. All these activities are transforming local communities, mainly women and youth, and serving as models for other cities.
9. With the generous support of the Government of Italy, we will significantly upgrade the FAO Green Cities Initiative across Africa.
10. Today, we are proud to officially launch the FAO Green Cities Network.
11. By creating a network of cities committed to sustainability, we are fostering a global movement dedicated to building green infrastructure, improving food security, boosting local economies, and enhancing the quality of life for urban residents.
12. By joining the network, cities gain access to a wealth of knowledge, resources, and support, to better implement effective green initiatives and policies.
13. As our network of cities continues to grow, so will the impact of our collective efforts.
14. I would like to thank all the mayors who have been engaged since the beginning with their leadership and bold commitment.
15. Together, we are building cities that are efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable,
16. And which are contributing to the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life - leaving no one behind.
17. I invite all cities - big and small - from every corner of the world, to join the FAO Green Cities Network.
18. Your participation is crucial to shaping the future of our cities, and the cities of the future!
19. Thank you.
