1. Welcome to this celebration of the Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award.
2. This award honors the legacy of the remarkable Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, who devoted her life to fighting for environmental conservation in Kenya, across Africa, and around the world.
3. Established by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests in 2012, the Award recognizes outstanding individuals for their pioneering efforts in promoting community forest management involving indigenous communities and all forest users.
4. Past winners, and today’s Awardee, stand out as strong and vocal champions of change, who motivate current and future generations to innovate and take action.
5. Forests are vital to our planet and people, for climate change mitigation and adaptation, providing invaluable ecosystem services, for our food security and nutrition, and the livelihoods of millions.
6. Wangari Maathai understood the profound importance of environmental health for human well-being, and our dependence on forests and trees.
7. She inspired thousands, including young people, women, and Indigenous communities, to fight for a better world where forests play an essential role.
8. Today, we honour an individual whose achievements embody Wangari Maathai's spirit and dedication.
9. It is my great honour to announce that the winner of the 2024 Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award is Ms Nida Collado, President of the Macatumbalen Community-Based Forest and Coastal Management Association from the Philippines.
10. Ms Collado’s passion and innovative thinking have created lasting and positive change in forest management and restoration of mangroves – she is an inspiration for all of us!
11. Please join me in congratulating her for her outstanding achievements and steadfast commitment to forest conservation and restoration.
12. Let us follow in her footsteps and her vision for a greener, healthier, and more sustainable world.
13. Thank you.
