4 November 2025. Salameya, the Syrian Arab Republic. Salameya – Rural Hama – A dry farmland devastated by the most severe drought in four decades. The prolonged drought conditions have severely impacted agricultural production for the 2024/25 season, threatening thousands of farmers’ only source of livelihood and jeopardizing their ability to plant winter crops for the coming season.

Background Information The vulnerable farmers across the Syrian Arab Republic have faced this year the most severe drought for four decades, affecting harshly their winter crop production (2024-25: wheat, barley and other) by more than 50 percent decline comparing to pre-crisis levels. Now that farmers are preparing for cultivation season 2025-26, they worry about lower rates of rainfall and limited access to water resources, forcing them to either seek costly alternatives to save their only source of livelihoods, or to abandon farming activities to find any other work opportunities.
