Background Information
This photo is part of the FAO’s Emergency Programme for Bosnia and Herzegovina (OSRO/BIH/512/NET and OSRO/BIH/601 and 603 MUL: OSRO/BIH/512/NET and 601 MUL. Project OSRO/BIH/512/NET).
The Provision of Quality Seed for War-Affected Areas in Central Bosnia program operated from September 1995 to February 1996, during which time FAO provided 7 745 mt of wheat for the autumn planting season and 1 200 mt of fertilizer to needy areas.
The project objective was to help farmers of the war-affected zone in central Bosnia to be more self-sufficient in food production and improve the quantity and quality of their agricultural products during the 1995/96 season. Management support, transportation, and monitoring operations were funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Wheat was harvested mechanically or by hand in July/August 1996 by small-scale family farms and milled by small millers.
