27 March 2023, Zirnesti village, Cahul rayon, Republic of Moldova - A truck loaded with animal feed bags arrived in the first of the 34 villages of Cahul rayon, to support the most vulnerable families that rely on their livestock for their basic food needs. Threatened by the consequences of the war in Ukraine and the severe drought that occurred in 2022, nearly 2 000 rural families from 3 rayons in the Republic of Moldova received during March month emergency cattle feed provided from FAO own funds and through an FAO-UNDP Joint project with financial support from the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).

Background Information
The first project aims to improve the food security of the Republic of Moldova and address the regional impact of the current socio-economic crisis caused by the military conflict in Ukraine by supporting the most vulnerable small farmers (particularly women-led farms and young people) in rural areas of Moldova with inputs and improved capacities for resilient production, while the second improves the food security and livelihood conditions of economically vulnerable smallholder farming households through agricultural livelihoods assistance. In this sense, the project activities are focused on developing the production capacities of vulnerable smallholder farming households through the provision of agriculture inputs and services, as well as protecting and preserving livestock assets of the most vulnerable smallholder farms.
