Background Information
FAO provided 1336 vulnerable herding households in Samangan Province, northern Afghanistan with 200 kg of concentrate animal feed each to keep their livestock alive, healthy and productive. Each household also received technical training on animal husbandry to maximize the impact of the feed provided. Livestock is the only source livelihood for most households assisted by FAO. Herding households face challenges, as feed and fodder prices have soared while casual labour opportunities disappeared in cities due to the economic implosion. Many vulnerable herders have been forced to sell their livestock in distress at low prices in order to put food on the table for their families, as they have no other source of income. The importance of protecting livestock in Afghanistan cannot be overstated. In 2022, 336 242 heads of livestock have already been protected by FAO in Afghanistan. Project symbol: OSRO/AFG/110/USA
