Background Information
Improving access to irrigation is vital for optimizing agricultural production and ensuring food security across Afghanistan. However, the poor conditions of rudimentary irrigation canals result in frequent water wastage, soil erosion and constant reduction of agricultural production. To address this challenge, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) restored the Sabol Olia irrigation scheme canal in Ghoryan district of Afghanistan’s Herat province. It covers 1 000 ha and benefits 1 300 farming households. Additionally, through this intervention, FAO provided temporary employment for vulnerable agricultural labourers in the targeted communities.
