Early warnings leads to more effective and timely responses in Mongolia.
An initial estimate by FAO is that 8 million USD will be needed for a partial commercial destocking programme to preserve the livelihoods of the 6 500 most vulnerable households. Other early response plans are also being drawn up in preparedness as hazard mapping shows a quarter of all soums - or districts - could be at high risk. For some herders this would mean losing the majority of their goats, sheep, yak, camels and cows - effectively destroying their livelihoods.
