At the request of the Indonesian Government the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supplies technical assistance to this project, which is funded by USAID. Assistance also comes from a number of national universities and international research organizations. The objectives of the programme are: to provide an operational network of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) training sites as a base for IPM technology development through field training facilities, curricula development and IPM trained field specialists; to develop, through the creation of strategic extension campaigns, an awareness of IPM among rural populations and a subsequent demand by small-scale rice growers for training in IPM.
