Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today 828 million people face hunger, and 2.3 billion people do not have access to
adequate food.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, conflicts and the war in Ukraine leading to an increase in the
costs of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, seeds and fuels,
We risk a food availability, food accessibility and food affordability crisis if we do not
tackle this situation collectively and holistically.
We all recognize that science, technology, and innovation are essential to make concrete
progress in achieving the SDGs.

For FAO, that means effectively translating innovations into practice, driving the
sustainable transformation of our agrifood systems, and creating enabling environments
that can change policies, mindsets and business models.
The FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 promotes technology and innovation to accelerate
impact, while minimizing trade-offs, and is backed by our new Science and Innovation
Strategy.
We are witnessing a rapid revolution in science and technology in the agrifood sectors.
For example, genetic improvement of crops and livestock, innovations in breeding
methods and gene editing technologies that can help develop crop tolerance to biotic and
abiotic stresses, and resistance to pests and diseases.
Technology and innovation in remote sensing and satellite information offer strategic
opportunities to provide early warning to governments, farmers and other actors along the
value chain to help them better adapt to threats and shocks.
Concrete examples of FAO’s work include WaPOR, a remote sensing tool for water
productivity using artificial intelligence that generates local solutions to water and land
productivity.
We are also initiating work on the microbiome, assessing implications of innovations,
informing research on developing priorities.
Together with the World Health Organization and the World Organization for Animal
Health, we build country capacity in genomic surveillance, vital for early detection of known
and unknown pathogens.
Through our Joint Centre with the International Atomic Energy Agency we support
Members to harness nuclear techniques and technologies that address agrifood challenges,
while ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources.
We are also working on technologies to improve fertilizer use and to measure greenhouse
emissions.
The pandemic showed us that collaboration, transparency and knowledge-sharing are key
to successful response efforts.
We need to integrate data and information, and digitalization for better decision-making in
planning investments, and preparing for emerging risks.
We need to boost agricultural research for development, and narrow the technology
divide – FAO’s global public goods play a crucial role in this regard.
We need strategic partnerships to address global threats to our agrifood systems, and we
are therefore also enhancing engagement with the private sector, and boosting South-
South and Triangular Cooperation.
FAO stands ready to help countries leverage science and innovation to transform their
agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more
sustainable,
For better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all,
leaving no one behind.
Thank you.
