Script STORYLINE:

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, welcomed the Italy-led initiative launched today (11 March) to coordinate the response to the humanitarian assistance in Gaza in view of the deteriorating food insecurity situation.

Speaking at the launch, QU Dongyu expressed full support for the initiative named “Food For Gaza” which aims at addressing recovery efforts in Gaza, and to help resume key activities of affected agrifood systems and provide farmers with emergency agricultural aid for food production.

SOUNDBITE (English), FAO Director-General QU Dongyu: “I came here to support Minister [Antonio] Tajani and his efforts in establishing this working group. I think at FAO, during the past 157 days, we’ve tried our best to get all [food supplies and inputs] accessible there [Gaza].”

FAO Director-General called for urgent action to support the Gaza people amid the mounting risk of famine.

SOUNDBITE (English), FAO Director-General QU Dongyu: “It’s really a devastating situation, their [the people of Gaza] situation, so we should work together immediately.”

The most recent inter-agency Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase Classification shows a concerning trajectory towards starvation – with 378 000 people at risk. Most of the population is currently facing IPC Phase 3 Crisis Acute Malnutrition, and even famine, which is devastating and which demands that we work together immediately, added the FAO Director-General.

The newly launched initiative aims to support the efforts of FAO, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in developing a strategy for short- and medium-term aid coordination, contribute to the delivery of immediate emergency food and medical assistance to the population of Gaza, and contribute to the resumption of local food production.

SOUNDBITE (Italian) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani: “[Food For Gaza] Is a programme that has the objective of coordinating the action of these important Rome-based organizations with the Government of Italy, currently at the Presidency of the Group of Seven (G-7).”
