6 March 2024
Dear Members of the Global Leaders Group,
Dear Colleagues,
1. 2024 is an important year for the global AMR agenda with the upcoming UN General
Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR in September, as well as the 4
th
High-Level
Ministerial Conference on AMR in November hosted by Saudi Arabia.
2. AMR is closely linked to today’s food, feed, climate, and environment crises – with
implications on food security, food safety, animal and plant health, farmer livelihoods,
and environmental sustainability.
3. FAO recognizes that human, animal, and plant health are deeply connected with the
health of our environment, soil, water, and air – and impact across all areas of our
agrifood systems.
4. We therefore urgently need a transformation of global agrifood systems to be more
efficient, more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable,
5. To ensure healthy, safe, and nutritious foods for all, produced in a sustainable and
resilient manner that promotes equitable livelihoods, and with less inputs.
6. In other words, we need to produce more and better, with less.
7. To achieve this, we need:
One: to reduce the need for antimicrobials; and
Two: a responsible use of antimicrobials in agrifood systems with a “whole-of-society”
engagement - let all partners, governments, communities, civil society, youth, women,
farmers, academia, and the private sector think together and work together.
8. FAO has launched an initiative to Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for
Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation,
9. Which will support more than 100 countries to train agrifood workers and promote best
practices, including enhanced biosafety measures and alternative antimicrobial
methodologies.
10. These initiatives will require sustainable funding to implement national AMR action
plans, enhance capacities and improve research.
11. Strengthening global funding mechanisms like the AMR Multi-Partner Trust Fund and
advocating for domestic budget allocations are crucial.
12. But we also need to raise awareness on the social and economic impacts of AMR to
boost political commitment and better engage the public.
13. The AMR Partnership Platform is key and can play a vital role in the UN General
Assembly process by giving voice to multi-partner expertise and providing a space for
knowledge exchanges and dialogues.
Dear Colleagues,
14. Let us continue to work together in an efficient, effective, and coherent manner, to
intensify our efforts towards a 2024 AMR Declaration, leaving no one behind.
15. I thank you.
