WORLD ORGANISATION FOR ANIMAL HEALTH (WOAH)
91st General Session of the World Assembly
Video Message
By Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General 26 May 2024
1. I am pleased to address this World Assembly that marks the 100th anniversary of the WOAH,
2. And I congratulate the WOAH as a technical entity on its ongoing commitment to global animal health.
3. I am proud that many milestones in WOAH’s history are shared successes with FAO and have made important contributions to transforming global agrifood systems.
4. But we continue to face many animal health challenges from, among others, increased
transboundary diseases, the climate crisis, land use change, and more demand for animal products.
5. These challenges cannot be addressed by one sector alone.
6. As one of the priority programme areas in the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31, the One Health programme supports the transformation of agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable.
7. And to prevent and contain threats that reduce agricultural production, zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), as well as to mitigate adverse ecosystem effects.
8. With the World Organisation for Animal Health, we work together under the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases to address transboundary disease control.
9. This year we celebrate 20 years of this Global Framework during which we will launch the Joint Global Control Strategy for avian influenza to make poultry systems more disease resilient.
10. We are also working together to enhance global One Health intelligence, monitoring, and
responding to emerging threats through the joint Global Early Warning System.
11. To effectively transform livestock systems, producers need equitable access to primary health services, innovative solutions and affordable access to quality vaccines.
12. In September, we will organize a Global Conference on Animal Health Innovation, Reference Centers and Vaccines bringing together global partners to discuss sustainable and impactful solutions.
13. Within the One Health Quadripartite, we work at the global level to address the rising threat of AMR by working to reduce the need for antimicrobials across agrifood systems as the most effective way to prevent, control and manage infectious diseases and emergence
of resistance.
14. 2024 is an important year with the UN General Assembly High-level meeting on AMR, and I look forward to an ambitious and transformative outcome declaration.
15. I also wish to highlight that the joint Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) Eradication
Programme has entered its final phase – we now need a final push to mobilize the additional resources and political commitment to achieve PPR eradication by 2030.
16. I look forward to continuing collaborating with the World Organisation for Animal Health,
working together in an efficient, effective, and coherent manner for the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
17. One hundred years is short, we need to work more for people and the planet, together.
18. Thank you.
