1. On this United Nations International Day of Argania, we honour the Argan, a magnificent
multipurpose tree that grows in arid and semi-arid areas of Morocco.
2. For centuries, the Argania ecosystem has provided local people with valuable benefits, such
as argan oil, wood-fuel, and grazing lands.
3. Rural women extract and process Argan oil, one of the world’s rarest oils, using traditional
methods that are passed down through generations.
4. The Argan tree is a cultural treasure and a true root for rural development, contributing to
employment and income.
5. Argan woodlands reduce the impacts of climate change by stabilizing soil and preventing
erosion that reduces desertification.
6. The deep roots of Agan trees tap into groundwater, which is critical in drylands where
surface water is scarce.
7. FAO recognizes the Argan-based agro-sylvo-pastoral system in the area of Ait Sou-ab–Ait
Mansour as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.
8. It is home to over 50 cultivated plant species, including the Argan tree, and 16 livestock
species.
9. This time-honoured system serves as a model for productive, sustainable, and resilient
landscapes, showing that good solutions for nature are also good for food security and
nutrition, human health, livelihoods and preserving culture.
10. I congratulate Morocco for its pioneering role in sustainably managing and conserving the
Argan woodlands.
11. May this International Day serve remind us of the essential role wild trees and plants play in
our lives and for our planet.
12. And let it inspire us to continue working towards the transformation of global agrifood
systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable,
13. For better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no
one behind.
14. Thank you.
