EGYPT 2017. Use of non-conventional water in support to sustainable agri-aquaculture development in desert and arid lands
15 November 2017, Cairo, Egypt - Plants growing at the Hesham Haggag Aquaponics farm during the visit of an FAO team and farmers from Egypt, Algeria and Oman, part of the program of Farmer-to-farmer study trips.
The main objective of these farmer-to-farmer study trips is to promote and develop national potential on effective sustainable non-conventional water use practices for integrated agriculture-aquaculture production systems through the exchange of knowledge, experiences and expertise among farmers from the three studied countries (Algeria, Egypt and Oman).
Aquaponics farms developed technique of soilless agriculture. The method uses a “clean and green' method of growing fish and plants together in a closed system that mimics nature, where plants get their nutrition from the treated waste of the fish. Their systems achieve a high level of control over the plant environment, achieving superior growth rates, productivity, sustainability, and quality.
