India. Culture laboratory where tomatoes, maize, potatoes, beans and many types of mustard seeds (Brassicas) are propagated
A scientist monitors the growth of a cutting in the culture laboratory where tomatoes, maize, potatoes, beans and many types of mustard seeds (Brassicas) are propagated. - - Plant Biotechnology. Biotechnology holds the potential to revolutionize agriculture by using novel techniques to develop new varieties of plants. In order to help Indian farmers develop higher-yielding and disease-resistant crops, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is helping to establish a biotechnology centre for advanced studies at the Indian Agriculture Research Institute in New Delhi. Training and post-graduate courses are provided in plant molecular biology research while innovative approaches in biotechnology and genetic engineering such as tissue-culturing are promoted to improve on traditional cross-breeding methods. Other studies cover biological pest control and nitrogen fixation to improve soil fertility. A special project is developing an improved oilseed hybrid to help India's edible oil shortage.
