Multi-Use Forestry and Agro-Forestry Development

Government trainees and forest worker make a tree inventory in the Upper Pampanga River Basin area. - - Multi-Use Forestry and Agro-Forestry Development. Multiple-use forestry means the bringing together of watershed management, reforestation, industrial plantations, timber harvesting, wildlife management and the introduction of labour-intensive practices to create long-range agro-forestry development. Under the government project, field training and research centres have been established in national forests. Trainees and forest workers carry out species trials and the introduction of stabilization techniques in erosion gullies such as the planting of Leucaena, a fast-growing legume tree now being cultivated in many tropical countries for both soil conservation and provision of animal fodder. The government project has been assisted by UN/FAO experts provided through a UNDP contribution of over USD 1.5 million. Filipino counterparts carry on the work after the experts leave.
