Script Video Message By Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General
23 June 2024
1. I am pleased to address the 26th International Union of Forest Research Organizations World Congress, which is especially significant as we also celebrate the 75th anniversary of formal collaboration between our two organizations.
2. We have been working together since 1949 to promote forestry and associated industries, and scientific research.
3. This year’s theme “Forests and Societies towards 2050” is very timely as the world is changing considerably, bringing greater challenges.
4. The impacts of the climate crisis, urbanization, and the increasing competing demands from a growing population for food, water, feed, fibre, fuel and energy, put an ever-increasing pressure on forests and natural resources.
5. And this in turn, puts at risk the future of our societies, their food security, and the forest ecosystem services they depend on.
6. The challenges are multiple, but they also present us with many opportunities due to scientific and technological advancements.
7. We must continue to leverage our knowledge to maximize the contributions of forests and trees to food security, the bioeconomy, and a healthy life for all.
8. Thanks to decades of collaborative research, we know that forests and trees are vital for
sustaining and transforming agrifood systems, for food and water security, for livelihoods and the economy, and for climate action.
9. We know that the rich biodiversity of forests is essential for improving the resilience of agrifood systems, and to sustainably increase food production and diversity.
10. FAO has developed a roadmap to guide work on forestry, to scale up innovations and
accelerate the transformation of agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more
resilient and more sustainable.
11. Effective implementation of the roadmap calls for strategic partnerships with forest research
and knowledge institutions, such as IUFRO, as well as with the private sector, civil society, and Indigenous Peoples, among others.
12. IUFRO and FAO share the common ambition to use science- and evidence-based innovation
to increase forests’ contributions to global solutions.
13. And we need to translate such solutions into policies, programmes, investments, and businesses.
14. We need to transfer science and knowledge from the lab to the field,
15. And the knowledge and experience of the farmers and communities back to the labs,
policymakers, and investors.
16. Our two organizations are currently preparing to establish a taskforce on forest innovation to promote the inclusive scaling up of cutting-edge forestry innovations around the world.
17. Let us continue to work even more closely together, to foster innovations to increase forests’ contribution to the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life –
18. I wish you a fruitful Congress.
19. Thank you.
