World Food Safety Day 2024
Video Message By Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General
7 June 2024
1. This year we mark the 6th World Food Safety Day, to raise awareness and lead action on food safety.
2. Food safety is critical for food security and health security.
3. FAO’s mandate guides us to ensure that all people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safe,
nutritious and affordable foods.
4. To achieve this goal, the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 supports Members towards the
transformation to more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable agrifood systems,
5. under the overall aspiration of the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, better
environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
6. To stay healthy and productive, every person needs their food to be safe.
7. And food safety is the responsibility of everyone along the entire value chain - from the producer to the consumer.
8. Over the past few years, we have been faced with unexpected and multiples threats, which have
affected food availability, food accessibility and food affordability.
9. We need to adapt to the changing reality and find innovative solutions to ensure safe and nutritious food for all.
10. Solidarity and collaboration are
key to avoid the collapse of systems.
11. Strategic partnerships are the solutions for joint efforts that are efficient, effective and coherent to ensure the safety of food supplies in times of crises.
12. FAO supports Members by providing assistance through FAO’s emergency programmes, policy
and technical support,
13. Including through the FAO/WHO International Food Safety Authorities Network to facilitate the
rapid exchange of information across borders allowing for measures to prevent foodborne
illness and save lives, among others.
14. On World Food Safety Day this year, let us reflect on how we can take increased preventive actions,
15. How we can better prepare for the unexpected challenges,
16. And how we can work better together, to address the food safety of the most vulnerable groups of our societies.
17. Thank you.
