Equus burchelli (zebra) on the Luangwa game reserve. - - Luangwa Valley Conservation and development (UNDP). The Luangwa Valley Reserve, in eastern Zambia, is just under 5,000 square miles (600 m.) in area. It provides a natural habitat for a wealth of wild animals and bird life which live in woodlands, swamps or on the banks of the Luangwa River. Improvements are needed, however, in the social, ecological and economic conditions of the valley. To this end the UN Development Programme, with FAO as executing agent, is assisting the Government with a four-year project to improve wildlife conservation and utilisation, to promote tourism and to develop the natural resources of the Luangwa Valley. The project includes efforts to halt the progressive trend of erosion, to stabilise the flow of the Luangwa River, to reduce over-abundant wildlife species and develop fire control plans.
