In order to improve the agricultura1 techniques of the farmers in the intensive1y cu1tivated area of Gitega, the Burundi Department of Rura1 Development asked for technica1 assistance from the U.N. Food and Agricu1ture Organization (FAO). In 1977 a 12-month, $60,000 Technica1 Cooperation Programme (TCP) project was 1aunched providing the services of an expert in agricultural extension. His task was to train young agricu1tural technicians in better ways to teach farmers, in setting up cooperatives, and also to train teams of progressive farmers who wou1d become teachers of other farmers in their own areas.
