Background Information Production of Filmstrips and Booklets to Promote Improved Practices of Animal Health Care by Rural Stockowners: TCP/CAF/4504.

The Government of the Central African Republic has devised a series of policies and activities aimed at strengthening and consolidating the development of livestock, which in 1986 was estimated at 2 200 000 head of cattle throughout the country, covering 16 million hectares of pasture. A national project for the development of cattle rearing is in progress with financial aid from various international organizations. Among other activities, this project is involved in extension work in the cattle raising sector to improve breeding methods. In order to strengthen these extension activities, the Government asked the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1985, to produce filmstrips and accompanying educational booklets and to study the possibility of utilizing this material in the field with stockbreeders. Four filmstrips on the main cattle diseases have been produced by the FAO's Information Division in collaboration with the National Project for the Development of Cattle Rearing (PNDE) and funded by FAO's Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP). These filmstrips, together with their accompanying booklets, are intended to help rural stockowners to recognize the principal diseases as well as ways to prevent and fight them.
