Background Information The Colombia National Federation of Coffee Growers, in conjunction with the National Research Centre on Coffee (CENICAFE), is promoting agricultural uses of residues resulting from the processing of coffee beans. After the coffee crop is harvested, about 55% of organic wastes or residue remains on the farm. Of the 45%, which goes for processing (extraction of coffee beans), only 4% ends up as coffee in the cup. Known as "coffee pulp", these residuals can be used as organic fertilizer, livestock feed or as an agent in biogas production. Studies are carried out at the CENICAFE Centre at Manizales (350 km west of Bogota) into simple, effective ways of dehydrating or composting coffee pulp and its use as organic fertilizer on experimental coffee plantations and vegetable crops. These studies have applications not only in Colombia but in other coffee growing countries.
